Half-life (PC 1998)

Half-life has won over 50 Game of the Year awards! The main gameplay is fighting alien and human enemies with different weapons. It creates a very intense realistic world and has fantastic storytelling. The player must perform combat tasks and puzzles to advance, there are no levels in Half-Life only chapters. The puzzles sometimes involve using the environment to kill an enemy.


Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox 2001)

Combat Evolved was released as a launch title for Microsoft’s game console in 2001 and other versions of the video game have been released on Windows.

This game lets players experience 3D environments. During missions, you’ll battle with alien and human weaponry. When using vehicles, the game will switch to a third-person perspective. You are able to battle three other players or alternatively use the single-player missions.


Half-life 2 (PC 2004)

This influential game transformed the shooter and has won 39 Game of the Year awards. Its surreal setting and a strong sense of adventure helps make it one of the best FPS games. The player’s presence affects everything in the physical environment, behaviours and emotions of enemies and friends.

Half-life 2 incorporates shooting, puzzles, storytelling and has added features such as physics-based gameplay. You can play this game on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.


Battlefield 2 (PC 2005)

Players choose to fight for one military superpower, can control over 30 vehicles and play with over 100 players. Enhanced features allow players to enter the action on the front lines and can increase their rank. It features weapons that can fire through barriers and you can unlock new weapons, medals and so much more.

BioShock (Xbox 360 and PC 2007)

This game won Metacritic Xbox 360 Game of the year in 2007 and we can see why! It creates a unique FPS experience and is very unpredictable. It’s the first game in the Bioshock series and was released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 in 2007.  You can upgrade your weapons with ionic gels, explosives and toxins to affect various types of enemies.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3 2009)

Players face off against a new threat! This game has a new gameplay mode that supports 2 player co-operative play online. Missions include favourites from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and new missions. It has new customisations, new weapons such as launchers, machine pistols and many other upgrades.


Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (2012)

According to the Guinness book of world records, as of March 2019, the best selling first-person shooter video game is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (2012). Around 40 million units have been sold and it is the fourth latest game in the series. It’s been released on a variety of platforms such as Windows, Xbox 360 and PS3. It is available on Xbox One, however, you can’t purchase the game directly from the Xbox One store but Xbox.com instead.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection (2019 & 2014)

One of the most influential shooters, and one of the best FPS games for PC and Xbox One, it can’t go wrong. Each game in the collection has received a graphical and audio upgrade.

The Xbox One version bundles together – Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST and Halo 4.

The PC version includes –  Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat and Halo 2: Anniversary. 

There have been no story or gameplay changes since their original releases. Many of these games could have made this list individually but together they are a must due to the amazing story campaigns and multiplayer mode.


Call of Duty: Warzone (Xbox One and PS4 2020)

This battle royale mode is free to play on Xbox One, PS4 and Microsoft Windows! The new elements to this game include receiving cash for numerous tasks such as completing contracts across the map, hunting enemies and defending an area. The best way to play this game is with friends or the four soldier squad mode where you can increase kills.
