Telia among world’s top ten telcos in IOT

Telia has been named one of the ten world-leading communication service providers when it comes to Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities and strategies, by leading research firm Transforma Insights.

Transforma Insights focuses on the development and application of digital transformation technologies, and was founded by renowned technology industry analysts Matt Hatton and Jim Morrish. In its annual CSP IoT Peer Benchmarking Report, the firm analyses the strategies and capabilities of ten chosen leading providers of global IoT connectivity. The report then serves as both a benchmarking report for the industry and as a guide for enterprises that are sourcing IoT suppliers.

Telia was selected together with, among others, AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica. The selection of ten operators is based on “an analysis of dozens of operators in terms of scale and globalization of offering.”

Transforma Insights’ Matt Hatton says, “Telia is a technology leader in its home markets and has demonstrated a great understanding of the changing dynamics of providing global connectivity. It has been hugely proactive in rolling out LPWA technologies to support its domestic opportunity. Telia has made a good choice of verticals to pursue and has a genuinely differentiated set of offers in transport and smart buildings.”

The analysis evaluates the strategies of the leading ten companies across a diverse range of capabilities in IoT and across three categories: technical, geographical and industry vertical.

“This particular recognition confirms that our strategy has positioned us well,” says Head of Division X at Telia Company, Brendan Ives, “We have combined acquisitions with selective in-house development, and formed strategic collaborations with other, major players. Telia operates in advanced markets that seek cost efficiency, differentiation and sustainability benefits from IoT, so it is important that we can support all customers with a full technology stack including a range of connectivity modes and platform capabilities, and more industry-specific requirements for those industries we chose to focus on.”

Ives explains that IoT is one important element for enterprises and industries to become more data driven, and that this is complemented with Data Insights, where Telia turns crowd movements into relevant insights for transport and retail planning, for example, and can generate actionable insights from IoT data.

“In addition, we also have consumer IoT offers for smart cars and for ‘the smart family’. We have a comprehensive approach,” Ives says.
