The United States is the second biggest eCommerce market worldwide, with a total revenue of more than US$343 billion in 2019, according to the Statista Digital Market Outlook. Although the market is quite mature with an eCommerce penetration of 77%, the U.S. online shopping business is still growing fast and steadily, namely by an average of 7% annually between 2019 and 2024. China is the only country that tops the USA in terms of market size.
When taking a closer look at sales figures, it becomes obvious that the U.S. eCommerce market is highly concentrated. In 2018, the top 5 stores accounted for almost one third of the overall online shopping market, leaving only small slices of the cake to other online retailers. ecommerceDB.com has recently updated their top 10 ranking of the biggest U.S. online stores by net sales – revealing no major changes to the 2018 ranking, but there is a newcomer.
Amazon.com is the new and old number one on the list of the biggest U.S. online stores in 2019: The long-established top dog generated 2019 net sales of US$73.7 billion, following a year-on-year increase of 15%. Second-placed walmart.com follows at quite a distance, but the eCommerce generalist recorded an incredible net sales growth of 38% between 2018 and 2019, resulting in overall net sales of US$19.6 billion. apple.com keeps its third place with 2019 net sales of US$11.0 billion, although net sales decreased slightly by -0.5% compared to 2018 in the U.S.. Most of the other biggest players from the 2018 ranking made it into the top 10 again, following solid double-digit growth rates. Three stores stick out, though: macys.com – currently ranked 8th – lost ground following a disappointing growth of only 0.3% between 2018 and 2019 (compared to over 10% in the previous year). kohls.com – which was in 10th place in 2018 – has dropped out, currently only making it 11th. Instead, there is a “new face” among the top 10 this year: chewy.com. With net sales of US$4.8 billion in 2019, the online pet store made it straight into 9th place. Chewy is likely to make more headlines in the future – as one of the corona winners, it is also highly ranked by analysts.
