Russia’s top 10 online stores

With a population of more than 145 million, Russia is the ninth biggest country in the world by number of inhabitants. Less than half of them actively engage in online shopping: With an eCommerce penetration rate of 41% in 2019, Russia is slightly below the global1 average of 43%. As a comparison – eCommerce penetration in the second largest global1 eCommerce market, the U.S., was 75% in 2019. Russia’s currently rather low number of online shoppers, however, also means that there is still a huge growth potential for the eCommerce market in the country – and it is already on a steady growth path: Russia’s overall eCommerce revenue increased by 11% and 13% year-on-year in 2018 and 2019, respectively, to a 2019 total market volume of US$19.6 billion. When taking into account COVID-19 impacts, the Statista Digital Market Outlook currently forecasts the Russian eCommerce market to grow almost twice as fast in 2020 – by 20% to an overall market revenue of US$23.6 billion.

Considering the competitive landscape, eCommerce in Russia is fundamentally different from most of the rest of the world: Many foreign players have been reluctant to open up web presences in Russia. Thus, the biggest online stores in Russia are almost entirely domestic players: is the unbeaten number one among Russian online stores: The generalist with a focus on fashion generated net sales of US$3.2 billion in 2019 and clearly leads the top 10 ranking of biggest online stores by net sales. The second biggest Russian online store by net sales in 2019 is The online electronics retailer generated 2019 net sales of US$1.4 billion. Third in line is The all-round online store, which is sometimes referred to as the Amazon of Russia, achieved a 2019 net sales amount of US$824 million. The top three are likely to expand their lead, considering their impressive year-on-year growth rates of over 80%. But fourth-placed doesn’t need to hide either: Following a solid growth of 63% compared to 2018, generated 2019 net sales of US$737 million. With net sales of US$730 million, in follows closely in rank 5, yet with a much lower year-on-year growth of 33%. Ranks 6 to 10 follow at quite a distance, with 2019 net sales between US$235 million and US$384 million – with two exceptions all with solid double-digit growth compared to the previous year.
